The Promise in Action: Scotland Event Highlights

Posted 29th May 2025

On 15 May 2025, the National House Project (NHP) hosted “The Promise in Action: Voice” at the Carnegie Conference Centre in Dunfermline. The event brought together care-experienced young people, Local House Project staff, and partners from across Scotland to share learning, celebrate progress, and explore the importance of youth voice in shaping services.

Alison Sutherland, the Promise said: “It was inspiring to meet so many of the young people involved in this incredible work. To keep the Promise, projects like this are vital as they make a huge difference in areas that must change. The members of the workforce that I met had a clear passion and commitment to improving young people’s lives. This was demonstrated at the conference.”

The day featured contributions from Local House Projects, insights into The Promise, discussions on the IMPACT study, and sessions on voice and leadership led by the Care Leavers National Movement (CLNM). Attendees engaged in meaningful conversations about how to support young people transitioning from care to independence.

“The day was amazing because young people were heard and listened to. Young people were able to go and speak to people about their experience and their House Project. I was heard. I didn’t feel judged.” – Ryan, young person, Fife Local House Project

“We were pleased to be invited to share reflections from IMPACT's partnership work with Fife's Local House Project at the conference, and to talk about how we can use evidence to support change locally and nationally. We look forward to sharing more about our work to support care experienced adults in both Fife and Coventry" - Rhiann McLean, Strategic Improvement Coach, IMPACT (Improving Adult Care Together)

“It was great to hear from the other House Projects and how they amply the voice of their young people” – Jennifer, Facilitator, East Dunbartonshire Local House Project

This gathering underscored the commitment to keeping The Promise by ensuring that care-experienced young people are at the heart of decision-making processes. As Scotland reaches the halfway point in its journey to fulfil The Promise by 2030, events like this highlight the progress made and the work still to be done.

"When we amplify the voices of young care leavers, We don't just hear their stories- we help shape a future where their experiences lead the way to change" – Dawna Mutter, Project Lead, Fife Local House Project

Young people tell us that the House Project approach helps significantly, but we should never underestimate the enormous challenges they face at such a critical time in their lives. This reality was brought home to us recently with Sue’s decision to swap her working life at NHP for retirement caring for her new granddaughter two days a week. Even though Sue is fully in control of this decision-making process - something our young people often are not - the transition has still been discombobulating; letting go of something she enjoys and that has defined her, and moving on to something that will be incredibly rewarding and joyous.

This past year has been one of growth and recognition. We moved into a vibrant new office space, welcomed new talent to our team, formed exciting new partnerships, and continued to evolve as a learning organisation.
